About the Opportunity:  

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Health & Safety Training Supervisor to join Pretium Exploration Inc.'s "Pretivm" Brucejack Mine in Northwestern, British Columbia. 

This position is located at Pretium Exploration Inc.'s "Pretivm" Brucejack Mine site within the Health & Safety (H&S) Department. The position reports to the Health & Safety Superintendent or in the absence of the HS&S Manager reporting to the Site Manager. 

Job Purpose and Accountability

The purpose of the position is to assist in leading the H&S Team in the development, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of the sites Occupational Health and Safety System, and provide the necessary H&S support and advice to Managers, Supervisors, Employees and Contractors that will drive the safety culture on the mine site towards zero injuries.

Responsibilities:

Preform the following duties with safety being the number one priority:

  • Must be able to fit in and work within a team-based environment.
  • Continue to develop and implement the sites Safety Management Systems
  • Identify areas that can be improved upon in safety & training and set attainable goals and targets with the management team(s), departments, and stakeholders to achieve those targets.
  • Liaise with departments to determine departmental training needs (training needs analysis)
  • Design effective training programs identified in training needs analysis.
  • Identify training venues and literature appropriate for onsite training.
  • Organize, support and mentor site trainers.
  • Ensure the necessary safety training is delivered/undertaken prior to workers performing tasks, and ensure a method of competency evaluation is in place to assess competence of the worker
  • Provide leadership and advice as a JOHS committee ambassador and assist in influencing the committee towards a proactive approach to site safety improvements.
  • Help plan and participate in internal or external audits
  • Assist in the management and monitoring of the annual training budget
  • Help identify, support and oversee key emergency response initiatives and training opportunities to strengthen the sites emergency response capabilities
  • Assist in writing all required internal and external reports, and check for accuracy and ensure they are delivered on time.
  • Assist in the oversight of the sites Hazardous Materials Management programs.
  • Assist with risk assessment workshops and safety related input for major capital projects
  • Help oversee and implement the site H&S software system, ensuring that all supervisors and users are adequately trained to input data.
  • Participate in daily and weekly safety meetings across all departments
  • Work with supervisors in all departments to problem solve and develop a positive safety culture
  • Mentor junior members of the H&S Team
  • Act as H&S Team Lead in the absence of the HSS Manager

Qualifications:

Must hold a current Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation (CRSP). Must possess a degree or certification in Occupational Health & Safety.
Must possess a designation of Registered Professional Trainer (RPT) or equivalent

Skills:

  • Minimum of 10 years in the Health & Safety field, with 5 years in a safety training role.
  • Experience in developing and implementing Safety Management Systems (SMS)
  • Exceptional knowledge of the mining regulations and WCB legislation
  • Strong computer experience and database administration and management skills
  • Knowledge of mine rescue and emergency response programs
  • Strong interpersonal skills to liaise with site departments and contractors
  • Must be a good patient listener and approach training strategically.
  • Ability to effectively communicate to a variety of personnel from senior management to laborers with sensitivity towards cultural and political differences.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to engage and encourage workers.
  • The ability to effectively manage project timelines and provide leadership
  • Exhibit strong time management, planning and organizational skills and be highly self-motivated and self-organized

Additional Information:

  • Work at remote location (camp) on a 13 days on/13 day off rotation and 2 travel days
  • Able to pass a pre-employment medical screening
  • Must be able to lift/ move up to 501bs throughout a work shift
  • Be able maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts
  • Able to work in areas of extreme weather conditions at mountain elevations (1400 m ASL)
  • Able to work in close quarters with the team
