We are Pretivm – a Canadian mining company, headquartered in Vancouver, BC, owns and operates the high-grade underground Brucejack gold mine located 65 kilometres north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. About the Opportunity:  

We currently have an exciting employment opportunity for a Senior Advisor, Community Relations with us. This position is located at Pretium Resources Inc.'s "Pretivm" Smithers or Vancouver offices, with periodic travel to the Brucejack Mine and communities in Northwest BC.  

The Senior Advisor, Community Relations reports to and will work under the direction of the Community Relations Manager, and will work closely with the Vice President, Environment and Regulatory Affairs. The Senior Advisor, Community Relations will collaborate with the Company’s other departments in the areas of human resources, operations, communications and permitting to support development and delivery of programs and initiatives to achieve Pretivm’s social responsibility goals.

Job Purpose and Accountability:

The Senior Advisor, Community Relations significantly supports Pretivm to maintain robust, mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in the region of the Brucejack Mine that align with Pretivm’s Social Responsibility Policy, Cooperation Agreements, relevant regulatory requirements, and sustainability objectives.  The Senior Advisor, Community Relations will have a direct influence on Pretivm’s brand in the region and the positive distribution of material benefits to surrounding communities; ensuring community interests, concerns, and opportunities are considered and advanced within the Company and the Brucejack Mine.

The Senior Advisor will have accountabilities identified on a task and project basis in the areas of strategic planning, Indigenous and community engagement, Cooperation and Benefit Agreement implementation, community investment, issue resolution, and sustainability.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Advisor, Community Relations’ responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Actively support the Company to create and maintain a strong and positive working relationship with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities and governments in the region of operations.
  • Understand the Company’s obligations and objectives in relation to Community Relations and sustainability such as those described in the Cooperation Agreements, regulatory authorizations, site management plans, and corporate strategy.
  • Working with the Community Relations Manager, drive compliance with obligations and attainment of internal objectives related to community relations and sustainability.
  • Participate in Pretivm’s community engagement and outreach activities (coordinating tours, site visits, community visits, job fairs, etc.) in northwest BC (Dease Lake to Terrace/Smithers) as it relates to the Brucejack Mine;
  • Act as a primary Company representative in ongoing communication between Pretivm and First Nations citizens and leadership;
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of short and long-term initiatives on an ongoing and as-needed basis related to enhancing Pretivm’s relationship with local Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities with specific focus on recruitment, employment, and contracting;
  • Contribute to development of strategic plans, programs, and tools to support continuous improvement to the community relations function that align with site and Corporate needs
  • Provide information and support to Pretivm’s project teams on areas specific to Indigenous culture, community activities and concerns, including internal workshops;
  • Act as a champion for cultural awareness within the Company and contribute to the development and implementation of cultural training across the Company;
  • Support coordination, tracking, and management of internal and external social, community, and sustainability reporting obligations, commitments, and objectives
  • Contribute to the development of community investment initiatives and long-term donation strategies;
  • Prepare and update records, minutes, spreadsheets, and reports related to Community Relations, including the yearly Economic and Social Effects Mitigation Plan (ESEMP);
  • Develop annual budgets for Community Relation activities, manage relevant costs, and track budget progress.
  • Communicate social, community, and sustainability issues that arise to Management and support consideration, resolution, and feedback process.
  • Work closely with Human Resources to develop strong tracking, analytics, and reporting of Pretivm’s employment diversity metrics;
  • Make recommendations to Management respecting workplace retention and development of Indigenous community members
  • Active use of database and other systems to track communication and engagement activities, implementation of internal objectives, and compliance with regulatory requirements of formal agreements.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualification and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate will possess post-secondary qualifications in mining, social sciences, natural resource development, sustainability, or related field with a minimum 7 years of relevant experience. Prior experience working directly with Indigenous people and cultures is required, experience within the mining industry is preferred.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Cross-cultural awareness with an understanding and sensitivity of the challenges associated with differences in cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Understanding of Indigenous culture, history, reconciliation, protocol, and issues faced by Indigenous groups
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in implementing social/community strategies and programs
  • Demonstrated capability to build trust and personal credibility
  • Interest in Sustainability and developing career in this or a related field
  • Demonstrated project management, administrative, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships, and to adapt quickly to solve problems in a collaborative manner
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain consistent positive professional image on and off the job
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a team-player, able to build rapport with various community groups and organizations
  • Strong presentation skills in small and large settings
  • Prior experience with Stakeholder Management Software (i.e. Stake Tracker or Boréalis) is considered an asset
