Following the recent acquisition of Pretivm, Newcrest now own and operate the Brucejack Mine located 65 kilometers north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. 

The Brucejack underground mine is one of the largest and highest-grade gold mines globally and as of January 1, 2021 has proven and probable mineral reserves of 3.9 million ounces of gold (14.4 million tonnes grading 8.3 grams per tonne gold) with a mine life of 12 years.

The Opportunity:

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, Red Seal High Voltage Electrician to join the Brucejack Project in Northwestern, British Columbia. 

Located approximately 65 kilometers from Stewart, you will report to the Maintenance Superintendent or designate and work a rotating schedule.

In this role, you will install and maintain electrical services by diagnosing and repairing electrical wiring, equipment problems and power generation in accordance with relevant codes. The High Voltage Electrician is accountable for the safe and timely provision of these services in an effective and efficient manner in accordance with all relevant codes and regulations.

  • Inspecting electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards and defects; 
  • Diagnosing and repairing malfunctioning electrical systems, apparatus, and components;
  • Using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of breakdowns and correcting the problems; 
  • Reading and interpreting electrical, mechanical and architectural drawings to determine wiring layouts;
  • Planning sketches, layout and install equipment and fixtures based on job specifications; 
  • Designing control panels and installing circuit power distribution; 
  • Delivering daily updates at morning meetings to communicate electrical instrumentation and/or equipment and control availability issues/actions; 
  • Following up on daily electrical installation and maintenance repairs to ensure all relevant components will be completed as planned; 
  • Establishing methods to meet work schedules and coordinating work activities with other project supervisors or managers; 
  • Monitoring and evaluating electrical instrumentation, controls and equipment operating procedures to minimize failures and downtime; 
  • Recommending changes to installations and/or electrical maintenance procedures when deemed necessary or appropriate; 
  • Maintaining electrical systems by conducting system tests and completing preventive maintenance requirements; 
  • Maintaining a safe work environment by following established codes, standards and operating procedures; 
  • Testing electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures, and using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system;
  • Coordinating work assignments/projects in a timely manner to meet project deadlines; 
  • Preparing time estimates for work orders and jobs to optimize resource allocation; and 
  • Performing other duties and responsibilities to support the successful operation of the Brucejack Mine.

About You:

Our ideal candidate will have a valid Interprovincial Red Seal electrical certification in combination with at least seven (7) years of related experience in a mining or industrial setting. Preference will be given to candidates with strong knowledge of regulations regarding the installation of high voltage power systems along with high voltage trained substation experience (138kV/69kV). Familiarity with 138kV/69kV/5kV/600V switchgear and operation PSSP (Power Systems Safety Protection) certification is considered an asset.

In addition, you will demonstrate: 

  • Strong knowledge of regulations regarding the installation of high voltage power systems
  • Strong working knowledge of components such as switchgear, transformers and cabling
  • Strong knowledge of safety procedures to access high voltage environments and equipment
  • Detail and results oriented with the ability to adhere to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Experience with power generation plants
  • Good mathematical, scientific, mechanical and logical reasoning abilities
  • Be certified to work in HV substations in the province of BC with HV switching experience of not less than 5 years.
  • Be familiar with FS6 insulated breakers and switchgear
  • Be familiar with 5kV/600V/480V switchgear and operation
  • Ability to work at remote location (camp) on a 13/2/13 days off rotation
