Following the recent acquisition of Pretivm, Newcrest now own and operate the Brucejack Mine located 65 kilometers north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. 

The Brucejack underground mine is one of the largest and highest-grade gold mines globally and as of January 1, 2021 has proven and probable mineral reserves of 3.9 million ounces of gold (14.4 million tonnes grading 8.3 grams per tonne gold) with a mine life of 12 years.

The Opportunity:

The Temporary Geologist position is located at Newcrest Exploration Inc.'s "Newcrest" Brucejack Property, BC. From time-to-time work responsibilities may require the Exploration Geologist to be based out of the Knipple Camp. The Contract Geologist reports directly to the Senior Exploration Geologist or designate.

The Temporary Geologist’s primary responsibility will include completing diamond drill core logging of core from both Newcrest’s Valley of the Kings deposit and near-mine surface exploration targets as well as completing geological field traverses. The incumbent may also be required by Newcrest to assist in other activities such as production, exploration, and/or environmental related projects.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Ensure geological and sample data is collected, interpreted, and documented correctly and efficiently.
  • Provide guidance and assistance, where necessary, to the Geological Assistants with sampling of drill core, rock samples and the preparation of sample shipments.
  • Document, analyze, and interpret drill core.
  • Conduct surface geological mapping and sampling with attention to detail.
  • Assess and manage daily geological field traverses, planning helicopter pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Punctually submit completed drill logs and geological sample descriptions in required formats.
  • Conduct routine quality and validation checks on the geological and sample database as prepared at the core logging facility to ensure database integrity. Take ownership and responsibility for the quality and integrity of the database, ensuring protocols in place to prevent input/entry errors.
  • Detailed photography of drill core, visible gold samples, and rock samples for recordkeeping.
  • Ensure safety is given highest priority and document/report any related safety incidents and infractions in the appropriate manner.
  • Be a leader and role model for health & safety, environmental, and community relations initiatives supporting policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional work environment and encourage technical excellence from project/contract geologists, geological assistants, and field assistants.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with Newcrest safety policies and governmental safety regulations including those of the Ministry of Mines and WorkSafeBC.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

About You:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or equivalent.
  • 1-5 years’ work experience preferred.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, MapInfo and, Core Logging Software an asset.
  • Analytical, supervisory, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills with commitment to teamwork and collaboration.
  • Possess solid geological interpretive and analytical skills while maintaining flexibility in geological thinking, with a high level of innovation and ability to take the initiative when necessary.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to data and database quality and integrity.
  • Ability to complete daily geological traverses in highly variable terrain (heavily vegetated valley bottoms, snow covered slopes, scree slopes, ridgelines, etc.).
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, community, and the environment:
    • Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements and procedures.
    • Cross cultural awareness with an understanding and sensitivity on the challenges associated with differences in cultural and economic backgrounds.
    • Environmental awareness with a commitment to minimize the impacts inside and outside of the mine footprint.
  • Ability to work at remote location (camp) with a rotation of 14 days on, 12 days off, and 2 travel days.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment medical screening.
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 50lbs daily throughout a work shift.
  • Must be comfortable with helicopter transportation.
  • Be able to maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts.
