Following the recent acquisition of Pretivm, Newcrest now own and operate the Brucejack Mine located 65 kilometers north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. 

The Brucejack underground mine is one of the largest and highest-grade gold mines globally and as of January 1, 2021 has proven and probable mineral reserves of 3.9 million ounces of gold (14.4 million tonnes grading 8.3 grams per tonne gold) with a mine life of 12 years.

The Opportunity:

The Geological Assistant’s primary responsibility is the collection of geotechnical information from drill cores, the preparation of sample shipments and assisting in all aspects of surface exploration program. They may also be required to support the Mine Exploration Geology team in other aspects of geological exploration and/or environmental field work.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Coordinate, transport, and unload core into the core logging facility
  • Collect and document geotechnical data from drill core
  • Prepare sample materials to streamline sampling of drill core
  • Prepare sample submissions to assay laboratories with proper QA/QC protocol
  • Assist Geologist with logging, photography, or any other needs
  • Geochemical rock, silt, and soil sampling in challenging terrain
  • Demonstrate awareness and commitment to health, safety, community, and environmental protection in keeping with Newcrest’s goals and objectives
  • Assist exploration or environmental contractors with surface and/or underground programs
  • Assist seasonal Research Geologists with field activities and sample preparation
  • Mentor new Geological Assistants and ensure ongoing workplace and safety training occurs
  • Demonstrate awareness and commitment to health, safety, community and environmental protection in keeping with Newcrest Resources Inc.’s goals and objectives
  • Perform other related duties as required

About You:

Through the direction of the Lead Project Geologist or designate, this position is responsible for the collection of geotechnical information from drill cores, creation of geotechnical logs, the preparation of core samples and sample shipments, and surface sampling. The work will have both an indoor and fieldwork aspect, so the Geological Assistant will be responsible for ensuring they have the appropriate clothing, footwear, equipment, and PPE for working in both an industrial environment and in mountainous terrain.

  • Strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to follow direction from supervisor
  • Must have computer skills with MS Word and Excel
  • Previous fieldwork and drill core experience would be an asset
  • Able to complete traverses (hikes) in highly-variable, high altitude mountainous terrain (ridgelines, slopes, snow covered surfaces, glaciers)
  • Able to work in extreme weather conditions
  • Strong communication, time management and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Cross cultural awareness of the differences in cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license is preferred
  • Enjoy working outdoors
  • Ability to work at remote location (camp) on a rotation of 14 days on, 12 days off rotation, and 2 travel days
  • Able to pass a pre-employment medical screening
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 50lbs throughout a work shift
  • Must be comfortable with helicopter transportation
  • Must come to work with proper footwear (Steel Toe, hiking boots), warm clothes and waterproof jacket
  • Be able to maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts
