Following the recent acquisition of Pretivm, Newcrest now own and operate the Brucejack Mine located 65 kilometers north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. 

The Brucejack underground mine is one of the largest and highest-grade gold mines globally and as of January 1, 2021 has proven and probable mineral reserves of 3.9 million ounces of gold (14.4 million tonnes grading 8.3 grams per tonne gold) with a mine life of 12 years.

The Opportunity:

The primary responsibilities of the Geological Assistant 3 are the cutting and sampling of drill cores and the preparation of sample shipments. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for supporting the whole core sampling program. They may also be required to support the Mine Exploration Geology team in other aspects of geological exploration and/or environmental field work.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Cut drill cores using a 5 HP electric core saw.
  • Collect and bag drill core samples according to the sample intervals laid out by the Geologists and/or Geological Assistant 1 & 2s.
  • Assist with the preparation of sample shipments.
  • Maintain a clean and clutter-free workspace, including cleaning of the core saw and tray at the end of each shift. Inspect worksite and equipment (core saw) regularly for damages, report substandard conditions to supervisor.
  • Prepare sample materials to streamline sampling of drill core.
  • Assist in whole core sampling, bagging, and preparing any consumables that are required in the Geologist’s workflow, to improve efficiency of the process.
  • Assist exploration or environmental contractors with surface and/or underground programs.
  • Assist seasonal Research Geologists with field activities and sample preparation.
  • Mentor new core cutters and ensure ongoing workplace and safety training occurs.
  • Demonstrate awareness and commitment to health, safety, community, and environmental protection in keeping with Newcrest’s goals and objectives.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

About You:

Through the direction of the Lead Project Geologist, this position is responsible for the cutting and collection of drill core samples, and the preparation of sample shipments. The work may have occasional fieldwork aspect, so the individual will be responsible for ensuring they have the appropriate clothing, footwear, equipment, and PPE for working in variable weather conditions and within rugged, mountainous terrain.

  • Strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to follow direction from supervisor
  • Must demonstrate diligence while performing tasks, focusing on quality first and foremost
  • Take ownership of the work area, including organizing and caring for the tools and equipment being used
  • Previous core cutting experience would be an asset.
  • Solid time management and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Valid Class 5 drivers licence is preferred
  • Enjoy working outdoors
  • Ability to work at remote location (camp) with a rotation of 14 days on, 12 days off, and 2 travel days.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment medical screening
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 50lbs throughout a work shift
  • Must come to work with proper footwear (steel toed rubber boots) and clothing
  • Be able to maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts.
