Following the recent acquisition of Pretivm, Newcrest now own and operate the Brucejack Mine located 65 kilometers north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. 

The Brucejack underground mine is one of the largest and highest-grade gold mines globally and as of January 1, 2021 has proven and probable mineral reserves of 3.9 million ounces of gold (14.4 million tonnes grading 8.3 grams per tonne gold) with a mine life of 12 years.

The Opportunity:

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Assayer to join the Brucejack Mine in Northwestern, British Columbia.

The Senior Assayer position is located at Newcrest Exploration Inc.'s "Newcrest" Brucejack Mine and reports to the Chief Assayer or designate.

The Senior Assayer’s primary responsibility is to optimize the operation of the Assay Laboratory. The Senior Assayer oversees and coordinates all laboratory functions and is responsible for the accurate qualitative and quantitative analyses and reporting of samples and implements the laboratory safety program.

Perform the following duties, with safety being the number one priority:

  • Provides a platform for strong leadership and workforce empowerment by training and developing Assay Lab employees in all aspects of the lab functions and duties.
  • Directs the processing and testing of ore samples and analyzes results to determine grade, value and mineral properties
  • Develops appropriate industry standard assay procedures and instructional references for assay staff.
  • Able to carry out and implement new analytical methods and familiar with method validation and verification
  • Evaluate and ensure technical accuracy of analytical results within the laboratory internal QC&QC criteria and protocols
  • Oversees sample preparation, fire assay, wet assay, instrumentation, finish process and data approval
  • Performs operation and preventive maintenance of key analytical equipment such as Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), microbalance, ICP-OES, Carbon and Sulphur Analyzer, and other lab equipment
  • Maintain up-to-date records of relevant documentation required for accreditation in consultation with the Chief Assayer and Database Manager
  • Ensures weekly production targets are met and makes recommendations for improvement when necessary.
  • Determine daily production and provide weekly production summary.
  • Reviews production schedules and turnaround commitments to determine staffing levels based upon sample volumes
  • Research and implement new technology as available to increase effectiveness, efficiency and safety of assay operations
  • Oversee and monitor consumables and supplies to ensure that correct stock levels are maintained
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all Newcrest and occupational, mine site and laboratory safety procedures
  • Act in a safe and professional manner, prepare, and conduct daily tool box meetings and carry out routine laboratory safety inspections
  • Other duties as required by the Chief Assayer or designate

About You:

Bachelor's degree/diploma in Chemistry or Chemical Science  combined with a minimum of eight to ten  (8-10) years’ experience in a gold mine assay lab combined with at least three (3) years of direct supervisory responsibility. BC certified assayer is an asset. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Familiar with mining lab operations and gold assay procedures
  • Familiar with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Excellent data review and approval skills, especially on final data approval
  • Strong QA/QC knowledge and familiar with ISO accreditation
  • Strong expertise/knowledge of mineral processing and extraction
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills
  • Effective organizational, time management and analytical skills
  • Strong computer skills to include data processing and data base management
  • Ability to work at remote location (camp) on a 14 days on / 12 days off/ 2 days travelling rotation
  • Able to pass a pre-employment medical screening
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 50lbs throughout a work shift
  • Be able maintain high levels of performance over 12 hour shifts
  • Able to work in areas of extreme weather conditions
  • Able to work in close quarters with the team
